The result

"Emphasis helped create a television debate set to a very tight specification. The BBC’s requirements changed during the install and Emphasis were able to find creative solutions to these changes. They provided invaluable advice on all aspects of the set: producing graphics backings, dressing the rostra, supplying lighting and sourcing materials and equipment to make sure everything looked good on camera. The Emphasis team worked tirelessly, flexibly and with good humour during the install to make sure the finished set was completed to a high standard and was ready in good time." – Martyn Welch, Operations Organiser, BBC TV South

The brief

We were tasked with supplying the set for the EU debate of the southern region. Firstly the South Today studio needed to be made neutral. Then we were tasked with creating three seating areas: one for the politicians and two for the invited public. Additional lighting was required to 'lift' the on-screen shots.

The solution

Working closely with the BBC's Technical Director, we produced visuals that could be discussed and checked for their suitability. We then agreed on a layout that included a stage riser for the politicians and two 3-tier seating rakes for the audience. We transformed the studio by building a truss and fitted drape set which hid the usual set. A selection of LED truss warmers and LED Pixel Bars on very gentle slow chases were supplied to provide visual interest on camera. We also provided graphics and truss frames to provide interesting and bold branding.
